A Development Cooperation Seminar focusing on “Economic Shocks and the Vulnerable in Thailand” will be held on Friday, 6 March, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nai Lert Park Hotel in Bangkok.
The seminar, organized by the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), Thailand Development and Research Institute (TDRI), and the United Nations Country Team in Thailand, will discuss a new TDRI paper, “Economic Shocks and the Vulnerable in Thailand: A Case Study of Rising Food and Fuel Prices”, against the backdrop of the ongoing international financial crisis. The potential impact of these economic shocks on the poor in Thailand, and the government’s policy options to address them, will be covered.
Keynote perspectives will be provided by Professor Dr. Ammar Siamwalla, Distinguished Scholar, TDRI, who co-authored the discussion paper, Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Spokesman and Senior Expert on Macroeconomic Policy, Fiscal Policy Office, Ministry of Finance, and Dr. Titinun Malligamas, Director, Monetary Policy Group, Bank of Thailand. Dr. Somchai Jitsuchon, Research Director for Macroeconomic Development and Income Distribution, Macroeconomic Policy Programme, TDRI, will provide a presentation on the discussion paper while Khun Arkhom Tempittayapaisith, NESDB Deputy Secretary General, will give the seminar’s opening remarks. Ms. Gwi-Yeop Son, UN Resident Coordinator in Thailand, will provide the seminar’s welcoming remarks.
The working language of the seminar will be Thai, with simultaneous English translations available via headsets. A question and answer session will be held from 10:00-10:45 a.m., following the presentations. Registration for the seminar will be from 8:30-9:00 a.m.
Some of the key points in the TDRI paper, “Economic Shocks and the Vulnerable in Thailand: A Case Study of Rising Food and Fuel Prices” and copies of the TDRI paper will be available in Thai and English at the seminar.
